Boo!The editors thought they'd have a little Halloween fun with the Monz, and nothing strikes dread into Monz' heart like some pretentious indie rock!

Back to business: Monz heads to Fong's for some broccoli with garlic sauce plus vegatable soup. The broccli was both spicy AND garlicky. At the end of the meeting, Monz was presented with a special fortune:

Don't Look Now But Here Comes The 80's!Celebrating a post that could have been composed on a
Commodore Vic 20 (the shirt pictured above apparently is from a promotion of this computer), Monz treks to Leno's for a vegetable sub. "It's veg sandwich tuesday here at MYL!"

Synchronicity! Whaddacoincidence! On the day the Editors head to The Place to try out their new soup offering, Monz returns to the place for a veggie footlong with the works sans onions. Monz did not report on whether it satisfied. We were left unmoved by the soup (we chose roasted chicken noodle soup over the cream of broccoli). On the plus side, it was hot, we could make out the celery, and it wasn't awful. On the minus side, it was too hot, too salty (though not as salty as we had feared), and 310 calories seems a bit high for this soup. Wish they'd just take a license from Progresso and be over with it.

We would also be remiss not to inform you that on Friday Mrs. Monz made the editors' Thursday trek and was treated to linguini pomodoro at Bacci's. Or Monz was treated to. Or trick or treat. Or something.

The Mysteries of Waukegan!Ah, Fall! The bright colors, the refreshingly brisk air, the faint smell of burning leaves, and...the detritus of the casual scum of Waukegan who would drop a used flosspick in the secret lawyer passage from the courthouse to the G-street dining district! The editors traveled to visit Monz and boy, what a change! Fax machines whirling, court schedules turning, Monz could barely fit us in before an in-chambers pretrial! But gracious host that he is, Monz broke free from the office and took the editors to Bacci's, noting that he observes the progress of the above-pictured item every single day.

Bacci's is
not without controversy and indeed, Monz vigorously checked with the staff to make sure certain standards of hygine were being maintained during the appetizers. Then it was on to the food! After all enjoyed a bruchetta appetizer, Monz had angel hair caprese penne pesto, while the editors tried the controversial chicken pomodoro (ok, linguine pomodoro with chicken). Alas no vino. With that Monz checked in with his clerical staff and dashed to court and the editors began the long trek back to Chicago, basking in the afterglow of yumminess and munificence.

Mystery Lunch!
The editors ventured to Waukegan to investigate exactly what it is that makes Monz' lunches so yummy. And only a cornucopia of obstacles, including a multicar pileup on Interstate 94 (and the ensuing traffic delay), is preventing them from telling you now (in other words, it's late, we're weary, forgive us and please tune in tomorrow for a full report!)

Spread the Love, Spread the Lunch!
Today the Monz-inspired editors asked a panhandler outside of a Chicago McDonald's if they could purchase some lunch. The panhandler was agreeable and requested the most expensive item on the menu. The editors returned shortly thereafter with the lunch, at which time they were grilled over whether they had included a complete line of condiments. This recalled a stern admonishion the Monz once gave the EIC: "I can't believe you would deny the fixins!" (Truth be told, usually in this situation the editors are showered with uncomfortable amounts of gratitude).

Betwixt Chicago (not too far away from this very incident!) and Waukegan, Monz stops home for some Amy's no cheese vegetable pizza and hummus.

Things That Make You Go Hmmm!

We're not saying, we're just saying. And we're saying Monz headed back to Bacci's for bruschetta and chicken pomodoro. It's a thing that makes you say "mmmm!"

See the Signs, Know Their Meaning!

It was our hope to post an intriguing image the editors recently discovered, but fate intervened and they were stuck at the office long into the night. Then we looked at Monz' lunch report:

"No lunch for Monz (clients)"

We should have known! But since we're on a youtube kick of late, we'll just ask...

Please Respect the Lunch!

Even though a) as far as we know, Monz doesn't watch My Name Is Earl, b) Monz doesn't share these sentiments towards crustations but possibly does towards other beasts (though we're not sure of either as the wise way of the Monz can sometimes be inscruitable) and c) we don't know how long this will be available as a certain last-place network has apparently been pretty active in asserting their allegable copyrights, we present you with a weekend special classic:

A Real Course In Food Writing!

Here's another barely-updated food blog that made "Best of Blogs" instead of MYL. I'm sorry, but we're offended! A multi-daily event such as eating requires more than bi-monthly guidance!

So, Monica Bhide, instead of offering a food writing course we invite you to take a food writing course from us by reading Monz Yummy Lunch! Like, today, Monz went to Leno's (as he is wont to do on a Friday) for a 10" veggie sub with hot peppers on the side. Now that's a life of spiccccce!

Wicked Evil Satanic Fakes!

The editors have great respect for a writer/reporter/social observer/etc. type you may not have heard of: Adrienne Crew. From her insightful essays on Salon.com to her wonderfully named andwritten "Crazedloveblog" (now only open to friends, which doesn't include us!), we have enjoyed nearly everything she's written. Until we found Best of Blogs, which she coauthored. We're not included in the "Blogs About Eating"! Yet some real dogs are: consider this blog that invokes the venerated term. Check out this update schedule? WTF? We update you that the Monz was at CLE all day -- they provided a vegetarian sandwich with tomatoes and cucumbers and mustard, and some pasta on the side. Go Lancers!

Hellish Day!

In more ways than one! Monz went to Fongs -- he told us for what but we can only recall for sure it was a tofu dish, we think a peanut satay.

The Salmon Dance!

Monz didn't have salmon for lunch, as he went to Bacci's for bruschetta and linguine pomodoro, hobnobbing with the Waukegan bar while taking in the dining experience. But he still wants his loyal readers to be happy. Hi Sammy!

Wisdom of the World!
The Fashion Editor (FE) found himself in rural Illinois this weekend and realized that upon his return he would be in need of an additional pair of dress socks. So he stopped by a local drugstore where he found some "No Nonsense 'Lookin' Good, Mister (tm)'" socks. Further inspection showed these socks were made in the good old USA and came with "a No nonsense tip: Most employers will let you take a break if you're at your boilign point. If you're about to do something really stupid at work, walk outside and take a deep breath. You'll be glad you did." The Socks of Widsom refer you to the No Nonsense Website for more tips.

Our tip to you: go to Whole Foods for two tofu spring rolls from WF, add a slice of homemade vegan pizza (leftover from the night before) a honeycrisp apple and a banana and have it for lunch. Like the Monz!

Fruity!

Today MYL presents a cautionary tale, at considerable embarassment to the Food Editor (FE). Yesterday the FE received theHarry and Davidholiday catalog. Once the FE, in a campaign to eat healthier, signed up for their "Light Siz" fruit of the month club (tm). Same fruits, just fewer in each shippment. Sure it was pricey (this year's 12-month club costs $220), but the FE was promissed top quality, succulent, juicy offerings of some of the best fruit on earth. Jonagold apples, Oregold peahes, velvet plums, golden pineaples, and the Harry and David signature: Royal Riviera (tm) pears! So, January comes around and so does a box of esquisitely wrapped pears -- hmm, a touch overripe, but not bad. But a horrible surprise awaited in February, when the FE opened the box and read a note that said there was a shortage of the fruit of the month, so they were exercising their right to make a replacement of equal or greater value: chocolates! A call to customer service did not resolve this betrayal of the FE's healthy eating trust! So the FE kicked himself out of the club, took the refund, and went to McDonalds.

Monz has a cautionary tale too: when going to Leno's for a 10" veggie (no onions), don't let them forget the side of hot peppers, let your lunch be yummy, if not spicy.

Monz' Lunches -- They'rrrrrre Great!

A trip to Fong's for the Farmer's Market and veggie soup. Delicious, and optimism abounds that it won't make the Monz ill.

Fight It!Longtime MYL readers know that this blog fights for what is right, which often times means fighting against titantic forces of nature. Forces like laziness, greed, and...other feelings. For example,
the premature appearance of Christmas marketing. Thus we note with dispair that the city of Chicago has begun stringing up holiday lights downtown (the picture, taken by the MYL crack reporting team this very afternoon at Randolph and LaSalle (though with a grainy cell phone photo that had to be blown-up) is sad evidence of this fact).

Monz had a struggle against nature today too, yet ultimately prevailed in eating his lunch, a mysterious veggie concoction from China Garden titled "Happy Buddha" which seems to have little specific meaning in the world of Chinese food save an indication it's a veggie dish.

Pro-Lunch and Pro-Life!

The word "abortion" once meant "failure." We were reminded of this by a question that the Music Editor received the other day: "I love your song parodies -- do you run all of them or are there some that don't "make the cut"?"

Oh, quality control is job one around here! Take this cutting-room floor version of a recent Justin Timberlake hit. It started out promissing:
We're bringing tasty back, those other lunches should stay in the sack...
and the verse-ending third party yelp
Take it to the fridge!
worked ok, but further inspiration was not forthcomming. When it comes to our songs, we're anti-abortion!

We would have been inspired by Monz' work-at-home lunch: Vegetable Pancakes from Sunset Foods, with some pita chips, sunset hummus and sunset bruschetta.

Last of the Monchhichis!

Don't you wish you had a boss like the Monz? As the rising star of the Lake County bar grows the practice, he takes his new employee to Bacci's for a first day lunch of Linguine Pomodoro and Bruschetta. "The good news is that they had the good bruschetta bread and they wrote down Linguine!"

Meanwhile, MYL dinner CC was startled when the Weekend Editor (WE) didn't know who the Monchhichis were, even after the reminder below. Is the WE clueless? Is CC just clued-in? Take our poll and help us find out!

Flagrantly Violating the Constitution!

No, we're not talking about the current administration! Continuing with our Canadian Mondays series, we're talking about the famed presidency of Chester Arthur. The Constitution prohibits foreign-born citizens like Arnold Schwarzenicantspellit from becoming president, but that didn't stop good old Chet, even though he was born in Quebec.

What's next? Will we discover that Leno (of Waukegan's Leno's) is really Lenois? The only thing we're certain of is that Monz had a 10 inch veggiewich from Leno's and that it contained some very autumnal orange colored peppers.

Fairness Doctrine!

We don't frequently link to staunch partisan political cites here on MYL, but this reaction from "Max" to today's news that Idaho senator Larry Craig is withdrawing his resignation from the senate should not go unnoticed. Nor should Monz' lunch woes go unwitnessed! "Bacci's for bruschetta and angel hair pomodoro. Bummer! No crustini bread, so bruschetta served on soggy toast. Wanted linguine opmodoro, but dude wrote angel hair. In spite of these minor inconveniences, lunch was yummy."

Sit-Down Strike!

Monz sits down for some Fong's for Schezuan Tofu and strikes at it with a utensil. The editors sit down and refuse to type more in shock and horror of the "after" photos foisted on their unspecting eyes.

Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing Baby!

MYL readers are sharp enough to recognize a double-negative when they see one. That's right, there is something like the real thing and that's our fresh for health tip for today. Consumer Reports reports that Z-trim, a fake fat invented by a chemist at the US Dept. of Agriculture made of a various grains, when used as directed, tasted just like real fat!

Two (2) tofu spring rolls from Whole Foods and an apple -- now that's real.
