In These Challenging Times!Monz is here to help! Monz has endorsed and decreed that February will be "Frugal February," in which we here at MYL will propose tips to help stretch your dollar and Monz will add expert commentary when needed! Like a lunch of homemade vegan pizza on homemade vegan crust with an apple and banana is yummy!

Just Pull Those Old Records Off the Shelf, Eh!

In our continuing Canada Monday series, we note the peculiar pleasures of listening to Canadian oldies stations, like this one. Because of the law requiring Canadian radio stations play a certain amount of "homegrown talent" per hour, some of the songs might be unfamiliar. Check out this sample playlist:

THANK-YOU (Fallettinme Be Mice Elf) BY SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE
TURNED 21 BY FLUDD
BEAST OF BURDEN BY THE ROLLING STONES
COME AND GET THESE MEMORIES BY MARTHA REEVES AND THE VANDELLA
YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME BY WISHBONE
HONKY CAT BY ELTON JOHN
BROWN-EYED GIRL BY VAN MORRISON
RAISE A LITTLE HELL BY TROOPER
SURFIN' BIRD BY THE TRASHMEN
WOODSTOCK BY CROSBY, STILLS, NASH AND YOUNG
LADY WILLPOWER BY GARY PUCKETT AND THE UNION GAP
NO GOOD TIME TO CRY BY THE POPPY FAMILY
WAKE UP LITTLE SUSIE BY THE EVERLY BROTHERS
SHARE THE LAND BY THE GUESS WHO

Monz has a similar lunch -- both familiar and different -- as he does a double back-skip dittolunch!

Good Day Sunshine!
We put the Monz through the ABC's Lost "Sawyer Nickname Generator" while Monz puts Subway's veggie delite (on oaty grain bread) through the paces!

We're Hot Blooded, Check It and See!

Over the weekend the food editor tried the new Burger King "Angry Whopper." Ha! This Whopper wasn't even annoyed. It's a good widdle boy who wants you to pinch its cheeks and say "awwwww, how cute!" Neither the "raised on jalapeno" onions or hot sauce caused even a burn! That said, it was pretty tasty -- nice, smoky sauce and full of flavor. But MYL is stalwart in pointing out false advertising.

Nothing false about Monz' highly intriguing lunch of a Hazelnut cutlet sandwich on wholegrain bun (apple and banana). Monz suspected it would be yummy but never let us know.

WE Deliver for YOU!

Could it be that Monz has been moved from a black ops advisor for U.S. intelligence to advise the Administration on the federal budget? Could it be he's advised them that the central post office in Chicago could probably make do without Sirius radio? And recommended the resturaunt in the Capital Building study Fong's chop suet lunch special with hot and sour soup?

Clark McDerment!

Monz spent a busy day at Mrs. Monz' office, with a gruelling and challenging evidentiary hearing in the morning. Lunch was had at COSI: tandoori sandwich and carrots, with fruit salad. Monz enjoyed it.

It's Not School Lunch, It's Lunch School!
Announcing the first post-secondary education program in lunch arts and sciences! That's right, we're creating a lunch university, which will offer a bachelor's degree in lunch, a master's degree in lunch, and a doctorate degree in lunch -- a lunch PhD! We know, you think this is a joke, but it is not! You see, during the 2009 myl planning meeting, the editors were struck by just how deep the field of lunch runs. There's a whole body of lunch literature, a complex synergistic interplay of the physical sciences that is instigated by the beloved midday meal. Many masters of the fine arts have paid tribute to the lunch muse. And in these challenging times, few things are more essential than an understanding of the economics of lunch. Did we mention lunch history!

Thus, in the comming weeks we will be developing a cirriculum, as well as a digital lunch reference library.
You will be invited to enrol and earn your degree! And yes, we will be issuing official diplomas and having a graduation ceremony.

For immediate purposes, we would like your input on names for the new school. Here are some suggestions, please email us your favorite or alternative suggestion. [Note: These names have not been checked for trademark clearance or domain name availability, but will be prior to selection]

Concorida Lancer University
Great Plains College
Marlsgate College
Grand Lewis University
St. Brian's College
Waukegan College of Arts and Sciences
Belvidere Lewis University
North-Central Eastern University
Bernard Forrest College

You can prepare for the rigorous cirriculum with two breaded tofu turkey breasts with cranberry sauce, from Whole Foods, with an apple, banana, and Fresca. Yum!

Our Dream!

Tomorrow we will be launching a project so spectacular, so immense, so needed and yet so surprising, that even longtime readers might suspect it is a joke.

It is not. The staff is psyched and has been working tirelessly for this glorious announcement to come. We'll be soliciting your opinions as well for finalizing the project! Tune in tomorrow for the great news!

We don't have to dream that Monz had a "delightful and yummy" lunch of tofu spring roles and bean thread cucumber box from Whole Foods (and a Fresca, from someplace else) -- because he did!

The High Road!

Lunch is looking up, as Monz makes a "concerted effort" to only patronize Grand Avenue establishments. Sturdy Leno's for a 10 inch veggie sub and it's fine.

Knocking Us Out With Those American (Fake-Turkey) Thighs!

Rarely has Monz been as enthusiastic about a lunch as today's two (2) Tofurkey(tm) brats, reportedly very decently sized, on Whole Wheat buns with primo fixins:
jalapeno pickle slice, mustard, and organic sauerkraut! Plus apple (and banana if it passes quality control).

Above the Law but Below the Lunch!

Proving that you've never seen it all on MYL, here's our first riddle!

Q. What's a scumbag young lawyer at a big firm who bills more than 1800 hours a year favorite lunch?

A. PAD Thai!

And only honest lawyers went to Fong's today and had the hunan chicken lunch special w/ hot and sour soup for a "spicy and tasty" lunch.

Yah!
Ever notice how as the years pass, our advertising gets more tame while our pop music gets more crass? Is that one frightening demon beast or what?! Thank goodness Mrs. Monz restores tranquility to the soul with a Mrs. Monzmade vegan burger + olives and mustard on a wholegrain bun and an apple.

The Simple Life!Healthy Choice, a line of frozenables that Monz on ocassion used to eat before his lunches "went to seed" ("a little quasi-vegan humor there" - EIC), has come out with a very odd line of "cafe steamers." You get two trays, one with sauce on the bottom and another with the food on the top. After microwaving them, you dump the food into the sauce. However, HC realized the problem with this: most cafe's will put the sauce on top of the food. So they helpfully suggest that you can also dump the food on a plate and then dump the sauce on the food. There's still a problem though: the dumped food will either be 1) upside-down or 2) plate-side scrunched!

Why not simplify by having some tofu spring rolls purchased at Whole Foods, with a Shanghai Box Bean Thread w/ cucumber? And an apple. And a Fresca.

Monz also gives rare praise for an "incredible" lunch at a new Wheeling establishment (associated with some winery) called Cooper's Hawk. We still haven't checked out the Superdog location (only the second) which opened in that fair city.

Feeling Gravity's Pull!
MYL is experiencing technical difficulties as a cosmic black hole has swallowed-up two whole days worth of Monz lunch reports! Our technicians have ordered a super-graviton cyclometeric retrieval apparatus and will have the reports posted shortly.

Solid, Like a Smiling Rock!

As yet another independent music store closes shop, we cast our lonely eyes for a symbol of stability in these turbulent times. And, of course, there stands the Monz (or maybe sits) with Mrs. Monz-made vegan chili (keeping it real with a new glass container), apple, honeybell orange from Florida, and Fresca Citrus.

The Sweet Smell of Success!

We were a little baffled by Monz' lunch report and thus must risk Monz' displeasure by quoting it verbatim so that we can discuss. "Campari for a budget lunch special of chili and panini! Cheap and yummy!" Campari? That fancypants daring new entry on the Waukegan eatery scene? We know it's good, but how cheap can it be? We don't know if the price was right or if he's funnin' us sons. Or maybe it's just that the law is Monz' business, and business is good!

No Sour Grapes, but Lots of Sour Cherries!Fanagle-haygling fans of flavored beer in Chicago rejoiced recently when the Bells Brewery (of Kalamazoo, Michigan) returned to Illinois, bringing their unique cherry brew with them. Bells' cherry stout is unique in that is made from tart, not sweet, cherries.

And Monz keeps the good times rolling, starting the new off the right way with a great lunch and a cogent observation: homemade peanut butter and sour cherry jam sandwich on 7-grain bread. "Not the over-the-top 12-grain stuff, which was tempting, but just the plain ol' yummy 7-grain." (add an apple and a caffeine free Dr. Pepper).

Switcheroo!
On a day when the bulk of Monz' work duties lied at home, the Food Editor (FE) headed to Fong's in Waukegan to check out the fabled eatry himself. He had the hot and sour soup! He had the talked-up-by-others-on-the-net-but-not-the-Monz crab rangoon! He had General Tso's chicken! And what did Monz have? Matzo ball soup!

Winter Classic!

Not that sillyness at Wrigley Field, but linguini with vegan "meatballs" -- enjoyment diminished by a nasty cold.
